Calls from MCA for SUPP to boycott the Sarawak state cabinet were a result of the former failing to make an impact on the campaign trail in Sarawak, said DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang.

“The MCA leadership is showing itself to be even more irrelevant after its ignominious rejection by the Sarawak voters in the Sarawak state election on Saturday.

Chua, his predecessor Ong Tee Keat, MCA vice-president Gan Ping Sieu, MCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong and MCA secretary-general Kong Cho Ha were among a long list of MCA leaders who hit the Sarawak campaign trail. Gerakan president Koh Tsu Koon also joined the campaign.

It was revealed by Chua that he joined the campaign upon a personal invitation from SUPP president Dr George Chan. All but two of SUPP’s 15 Chinese candidates lost in the polls, including Chan.

“One of the biggest mistakes made by SUPP in the recent Sarawak state election was to expect the MCA and Gerakan leaders to save them.

“SUPP leaders should have realised that these very MCA and Gerakan leaders could not save themselves or their own political parties,” said Lim.

Lim argued that MCA’s failure to make a mark in Sarawak had sparked its “political gyrations” to egg the SUPP to stay out of the Sarawak state cabinet, while Gan has called on Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud to step down .

However, Lim pointed out that this was hypocritical in view that MCA has not reviewed its current position of having four federal minister and seven deputy ministers, who include individuals who did not win in the last general election.

 

“Why did Chua not review MCA’s earlier unprincipled decision in 2008 to be part of government when he took over as MCA president, but instead was more interested in getting his son appointed as a deputy minister and elevate his confidantes in government through the senate backdoor?” he asked.

Lim also rubbished MCA’s repeated claims that DAP was “irresponsible” for inciting racial sentiments in its Sarawak campaign.

He argued that Sarawakians had voted for Pakatan Rakyat collectively, which resulted in victories for DAP and PKR in 15 seats because of a yearning for change and good governance.

Lim argued that MCA should instead rightfully join Pakatan Rakyat in denouncing the attempt by Utusan Malaysia to promote the “1Melayu, 1Bumi” agenda which is against the Najib administration’s 1Malaysia concept.
