(AFP) The US embassy today advised Americans to avoid areas of the Malaysian capital where supporters of jailed politician Anwar Ibrahim are expected to gather tomorrow.

The embassy, in a statement, said a large rally is expected at about 10am (0200 GMT) at the offices of the national human rights commission in the old city centre.

Anwar's supporters plan to hand in a memorandum on human rights including his case. The ex-deputy premier is serving jail terms totalling 15 years after being convicted of abuse of power and sodomy but says he is a political prisoner.

The event is planned to mark "Black 14" - the second anniversary of Anwar's conviction for abuse of power.

Stay away from large crowds

The embassy said crowds may also gather around Merdeka (Freedom) Square, Masjid (mosque) Jamek and the nearby National Mosque.

"In some previous demonstrations minor clashes have occurred during clashes with police," the statement said.

"Although no violence to or against foreigners has ever taken place or is anticipated, Americans are advised to avoid places where demonstrations are taking place and to stay away from large crowds or gatherings."

On Monday the State Department warned US citizens to take "extreme caution" in visiting resort islands off Malaysia's eastern state of Sabah, where Filipino kidnappers struck twice last year.

Defence Minister Najib Razak took issue with the advisory, saying the islands were secure and large numbers of security personnel were posted there.
