Unlike MIC, the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) will not prohibit its elected representatives from frequenting nightspots as it will enable them to study and tackle social ills.

SUPP president and Deputy Chief Minister Dr George Chan said today that the party's six Parliamentarians and 16 state assemblypersons could go to pubs and bars provided they behaved themselves.

"Anyone can misbehave at any time at any place and it is not necessary to restrict them (elected representatives) from entertainment outlets," he was quoted as saying by Bernama .

Chan was commenting on MIC president S Samy Vellu's recent revelation that the elected representatives in his party would have to stay away from watering holes.

This requirement was part of the code of conduct which the party's nine parliamentarians and 19 state assembly representatives have to abide by.

Other requirements include not asking state governments for land for personal use and non-involvment in business ventures.

Better service

Meanwhile, Chan said every SUPP elected representative must have a profile of acceptance to be leaders of the people.

As such, he added, they could go and experience the nightlife so as to be able to tackle social ills in efforts to serve their constituents better.

On another matter, he said that there was public speculation as to who would fill the vacancies in the state cabinet following the resignations of Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Adenan Satem, and two assistant ministers following their appointment at thefederal level.

SUPP is said to be lobbying for another post of state minister.

"It is the work that is important because whatever title (portfolio) they hold in the cabinet if they cannot perform, their titles will be useless," he added.
