Opposition party PAS today condemned Pahang Mentri Besar Adnan Yaakob for displaying vulgar signs yesterday at the Sanggang by-election nomination centre, adding that it protrayed the behaviour of an "indecent" leader.

Adnan, who is the Barisan Nasional elections director for the Sanggang by-election, displayed some vulgar signs to PAS supporters who were cheering at the nomination centre in Dewan Tun Razak, Sanggang yesterday.

According to a source, Adnan responded to the Barisan Alternatif supporters with a "backside gesture". Many others, including photographers who packed the area witnessed the indecent gesture.

It was alleged that he also made vulgar "hand gestures" to the BA supporters who were singing to show support to the opposition leaders present (see photo).

Pokok Sena PAS MP Mahfuz Omar criticised Adnan's action, likening him to a "nightclub bouncer".

"I feel he has chosen a wrong career. He should actually be a bouncer," Mahfuz commented.

PAS expressed regret over Adnan's attitude and supported the "Adnan Samseng" title accorded to him by PAS supporters who had gathered to witness the nomination process.

"As a leader, it was not proper for Adnan to react in that manner. This incident leaves a negative implication for Umno leaders and the public will definitely not trust leaders who lack moral values," Opposition leader Fadzil Mohd Nor told malaysiakini when met at the Parliament lobby today.

Harakah editor Zulkifli Sulong also chided Adnan's behaviour. "It was unnecessary for him to react (in a vulgar manner) to the BA supporters who were cheering," Zulkifli said.

Meanwhile BA women MPs today jointly decided to campaign in the Sanggang by-election in order to explain issues pertaining to corruption, misuse of power, arrogance and injustices allegedly taking place in the country.

KeADILan President Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in a press statement today expressed confidence in the people of Sanggang whom she said will pave the way towards the direction of a new governance by voting for PAS candidate Hishamuddin Yahya. Hishamuddin, 60, is the managing director of Harakah . He was previously the Umno chief of the Maran division and a former Maran MP before joining PAS.

The BN candidate is Redzuan Harun, 49, who is also known as Ustaz Redzuan. He is a former administration coordinating officer of the Maran District Municipal and Umno committee member of the Mentakab division. Polling for the one-to-one contest will take place on April 1.
