Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital will choose the best surgical method to remove the bullet from the throat of Mohd Amar Mohd Azizi, 10.

Its director, Dr Raja Lope Ahmad Raja Ariffin, said the medical team is still studying the options available because the surgery comes with big risks.

“We also get help of specialists from outside Perak. This case is very unique,” he told reporters in Ipoh today.

Raja Lope said the medical team would choose the safest method and would brief Mohd Amar’s parents on the risks involved.

“Mohd Amar is in good condition and can take a soft diet. Let us pray that it (surgery) will be successful,” he said.

Earlier, Dr Raja Lope accompanied Menteri Besar Zambry Abdul Kadir to visit Mohd Amar at the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.

At a press conference, Zambry said the Perak state government will aid Mohd Amar and bear his medical costs.

“We will provide all forms of aid. The most important thing is to save the boy so that he can live like other children,” he added.

Mohd Amar was accidently shot by a policeman who was removing ammunition from his P99 Walther automatic pistol in Kampung Belanja Kiri, Parit on Monday.

The hospital’s consultant neurosurgeon Dr Cheang Chee Keong said Mohd Amar was fortunate the bullet did not hit the spinal cord or voice box as it could cause paralysis and dumbness.

Scanning via  X-ray showed that the bullet had penetrated the nose and was lodged in the throat less than one centimetre from the spinal cord.
