Transport Minister and MCA chief Ling Liong Sik will take a two-week break to decide whether to resign from his Cabinet post.

The announcement was made to reporters at the Transport Ministry after Ling's one-to-one meeting with Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad this morning in Putrajaya.

"But as of now, there is no change," he said of his decision to quit his transport minister post.

Ling dropped the bombshell that he intended to resign from his ministerial position on Monday during an emergency party meeting. He has held the position of Transport Minister since 1986.

Ling met Mahathir for about 15 minutes this morning to discuss his resignation before the Prime Minister chaired the weekly Cabinet meeting.

According to Ling, he decided to take leave after receiving the advice from Mahathir.

"He (Mahathir) told me that although he agreed with me last week that I can resign, but after watching the reaction nationwide, he thinks that I should not go, and he told me to keep my letter of resignation," Ling told journalists in his office at the Transport Ministry in Damansara.

Ling added he had intended to submit his letter of resignation today.

When the MCA chief was queried on the likelihood of him staying on as transport minister, he said that for the moment, he did not want to speculate.

Since the resignation announcement, throngs of party leaders and supporters have met Lim and urged him to stay on in government.

"I am very touched by the overwhelming request and expression of support," Ling said adding that he wished to go to some quiet place to mull over his decision.
