The presence of yet another K-Pop act in Malaysia could worsen a culture of “hedonism” among youths, said Islamic NGO Persatuan Belia Islam Malaysia (Pembina).

Pembina, a youth group under Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) said the government should therefore stop pop star Tae Yong from performing on our shores.

Pembina has also started an online campaign to galvanise youths against the concert.

“We don’t want such influences on youths, making them a society which only favours overt entertainment and comfort.

“We do not stop people from being entertained, but the K-Pop culture is not part of true Korean culture which favours politeness and humility,” Pembina president Ibrahim Mohd Hassan (iright) said.

Pembina’s social media campaign is aimed at creating awareness on the dangers of overt entertainment among youths, but the NGO is first to admit it is running out of time given that the Kuala Lumpur concert is on Feb 7.

It will nevertheless press on as part of a long-term campaign to ensure incidents like tudung-clad girls hugging K-Pop stars last month do not recur.

Pembina will also send a protest note to the Youth and Sports Ministry and Communications and Multimedia Ministry against the concert.

This weekend’s concert in Stadium Merdeka is Tae Yong’s first show in Malaysia, after playing at six Japanese cities, and is expected to draw 70,000 people.

His hit song ‘Eyes, Nose, Lips’ from his second album ‘Rise’ topped international charts and is a phenomenon in Korea, where it hogged the number one spot on karaoke charts for nine weeks.
