PKR is considering dragging Prisons Department director-general Zulkifli Omar to court over the department’s refusal to allow Anwar Ibrahim to attend the opening of the new Parliament session on March 9.

“The DG could allow Anwar to attend a trial on Feb 17 in the High Court in Kuala Lumpur, but is now not allowing Anwar, as a parliamentarian, to attend the Parliament session,” PKR’s whip in Parliament, Johari Abdul, told a press conference today’.

“This does not make sense,” Johari said.

“Maybe we will take him to court - stopping a parliamentarian from going to Parliament is a serious matter,” the Sungai Petani MP added.

Johari said that Anwar still qualifies as MP as the latter’s family had submitted an application for a royal pardon, for which the outcome is still pending.

However, PKR is also planning to collect signatures to send in a petition to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to allow Anwar attend the Parliament session.

“I’m looking at the possibility of urging the rakyat to collectively send petition on the matter to Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said.

Yesterday, the Prisons Department refused a request by Anwar’s daughter Nurul Izzah and wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to allow Anwar to attend the Parliament session.
