Sarawak DAP said today that it will decide in the next few days whether to leave the state Pakatan Rakyat, which also comprises Sarawak PKR and PAS, following the passing of the Kelantan hudud bill.

Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen said in a statement today: “In light of the backstabbing by PAS in tabling the hudud bill in Kelantan, it is now either PAS or DAP in Pakatan Rakyat Sarawak.

“Given this betrayal, DAP Sarawak will have no choice but to consider taking the final step to leave Pakatan. As of now, I see no other option but to break out of Sarawak Pakatan.”

This would be the most important decision to be made since he took helm of the Sarawak DAP in June 2013, said Chong ( left ), who is the MP for Bandar Kuching and assemblyperson for Kota Sentosa.

He will convene a state DAP committee meeting soon to get the endorsement of the full committee on the matter.

Chong also noted that the Kelantan hudud amendment bill was fully supported by Umno, which is the backbone of the BN.

This, he pointed out, was clearly a collaboration of both PAS and Umno to push hudud through.

'Other parties in BN must also take a stand'

“There is no question. DAP will take a strong stand against the implementation of hudud in Malaysia.

“More importantly, all the other non-Umno parties in BN must also make their stand loud and clear, not only to PAS but also to Umno,” Chong said.

He recalled that when Sarawak joined the Federation of Malaya, together with Sabah and Singapore to form Malaysia, one of the conditions was that Malaysia would remain a secular state.

“This is especially so since there is, and until this day, no official religion for Sarawak,” he pointed out, adding that the move by PAS, supported by Umno, undermined the formation of Malaysia.

“Therefore, I call upon all political parties in Sarawak to condemn the passing of hudud by the Kelantan state assembly.

“Any attempt by any person, or political party, to undermine the secular status of Malaysia, be it by PAS or Umno, must be condemned,” Chong added.
