Sarawak DAP and the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) have gone into a war over hudud and have started accusing each other of being “agents” - of Umno in the case of SUPP and of PAS in the case of DAP.

The war of words followed the passing of the hudud enactment by the Kelantan state assembly and the intention of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang to move a motion on hudud in Parliament.

As a result of the adoption of hudud into law in Kelantan and the proposed motion by Hadi, Sarawak DAP last week quit the state Pakatan Rakyat, and this prompted SUPP Youth chief Tan Kai to accuse the party of staging a “drama” to gain political mileage.

Tan ( left ) pointed out that Sarawak DAP had withdrawn from the Barisan Alternative way back in 2001, when PAS insisted on implementing hudud, but the two parties chose to stick together.

The DAP’s latest withdrawal was nothing new, he said, adding that 14 years had gone by and PAS had never changed its political ambition of implementing hudud.

“You (Sarawak DAP) pull out of Sarawak Pakatan Rakyat and yet you remain a partner at the national level of Pakatan.

“This is funny. Almost every newspaper carried the announcement of the withdrawal on the front page, making readers to think it is something new,” Tan was quoted as saying last Saturday.

The SUPP Youth chief then went on to question the sincerity of state DAP in serving the people, especially when it only quit Pakatan at the state-level, but maintained the national level alliance.

“PAS has never given up on hudud but Sarawak DAP still wants to sleep with them,” added Tan.

'SUPP has always acted as Umno agent'

Hitting back at SUPP, Sarawak DAP Socialist Youth chief Wong King Wai said SUPP, as the BN component party closest to Umno's heart, had always acted as Umno's agent in Sarawak.

Wong said the reason for SUPP Youth attacking the DAP on the matter was because SUPP itself was not able to cut off its links with Umno, based on the hudud issue alone.

"SUPP does not realise the severity of the issue at hand. The implementation of hudud can, and will, split the social structure of the nation, affecting the plurality and religious liberties of Malaysia,” Wong, who is Padungan assemblyperson, said in a statement this morning.

“SUPP does not care about this… it is only worried about about DAP. Even though we have made the painful, yet brave, decision of leaving Pakatan Rakyat, SUPP still doggedly attacks DAP.

"On the issue of hudud implementation, SUPP has been embracing Umno with one hand, and has been pointing the gun to DAP with the other,” Wong claimed.

Such actions, he said, would encourage Umno and PAS to implement hudud.

Expressing concern for the radical Islamisation that was taking place worldwide, Wong said Malaysia was not spared, with many people having joined radical organisations.

“Under such circumstances, we must ensure that Malaysia will not become a base for radical Islamists. We have to protect the secularity of our country,” he stressed.
