Being the latest target of the police, Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah has been called in for investigation over Kita Lawan.

This comes five days before Kita Lawan stages its anti-goods and services tax (GST) mass rally on May 1.

“They told me it is regarding the Kita Lawan launching on Feb 28, I ‘supposedly’ had spoken during the event.

“Together with me, Rozan Azen Mat Rasip ( right ) from PKR Youth has also been called. We will be at IPD Dang Wangi 11am, tomorrow,” she told Malaysiakini today.

Prior to the Kita Lawan’s ‘Wedding March’ on March 28, several activists and politicians were arrested by the police and organisers deemed it was an attempt to thwart the rally.

The rally, which saw over 500 participants, eventually turned into a sit-in as cops blocked access to KLCC.

Unsure about police arrest

The investigation officer (IO) for the case is ASP Ahmad Kairuddin.

When asked what law will the police use for investigating, she replied, “No, they didn’t say.”

Also, Maria is still unsure if she would be arrested tomorrow, as it has become a norm for police to call in people and detain them upon the investigation.

“Freedom of assembly and freedom of expression must be respected and upheld by the police.

“They should not continue the investigation unless they have something to charge us with,” she added.

Kita Lawan is targetting about one million protesters for the upcoming #BatalGST mass rally this Friday.

The rally held in conjunction with Labour Day and themed ‘Kami Semua Tok Janggut’, will kick off at 2.30pm.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar warned that organisers of the May 1 rally must be prepared to face the law if they did not get approval from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) for the location of the rally.

However, Kita Lawan stressed it will still go ahead with its rally and said it was as though Khalid had belittled the constitution which ensures the right for all to gather peacefully.
