The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has no qualms with its hearing on 1MDB to be shown live on television.

"I have no problem with PAC's hearing going live," PAC chairperson Nur Jazlan Mohamed told reporters in Parliament today.

"The current parliamentary procedure doesn't allow it. The question now is who can decide to allow a live telecast - the cabinet or speaker (of the Dewan Rakyat)?" he said.

Nur Jazlan ( photo ) said some argued that the speaker can cite the parliamentary standing order in an ad hoc manner.

"The Parliament is still under the cabinet and runs under the Parliament Services Act," he added.

The Global Movement of Moderates (GMM) has called for the controversial 1MDB hearing to be telecast live, following Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s absence at the "Nothing to Hide" dialogue last week.

'Police lagging behind in admin work'

Following the PAC hearing on the RM760,000 furniture procurement by Battalion Camp 5 in Simpang Renggam, Johor, Nur Jazlan said his committee was taken aback that the police was not familiar with the government's procurement circular.

"Normally, the government will only pay after delivery. But in this case, the payment was made before delivery," he said.

When testifying today, the government officers told the committee that police lack efficiency where government procurement is concerned, Nur Jazlan said.

The officers also admitted that police lack knowledge about the treasury's procurement circular.

"We were shocked. Why is the police lagging behind in administrative work?" he said.

The police force has since organised courses for its officers and distributed the circular to them.

"PAC urges stern action on the officers involved in the improper payment," he said.

The hearing was conducted following the Auditor-General's Report 2014, which pin-pointed the weakness in the procurement.

Meanwhile, Nur Jazlan said the new series of the Auditor-General's Report will be tabled in Parliament next Monday.
