Activists Adam Adli, Shukri, Mandeep freed

Activists Adam Adli Abdul Halim, Shukri Abdul Razab and Mandeep Singh have been released from police custody.

Adam Adli and Shukri were released after Kuala Lumpur Criminal High Court judge Kamardin Hashim reduced their six-day remand to four days, and ordered them to be released immediately.

"The court finds that the reasons put forward by the investigating officer did not warrant the long remand period," Kamardin said in reading out his judgement.

Mandeep, meanwhile, was released during a break in the court's review of  his remand after his initial four-day remand order expired.

The trio were arrested on Friday over a press conference in which Adam Adli announced last Saturday's #TangkapNajib rally.

Mandeep meanwhile surrendered himself to the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters after police sought his arrest for allegedly showing solidarity with Adam Adli and Shukri at Dang Wangi.

Constitution allows peaceful assemblies

The trio appeared in court today wearing orange lock-up clothes and were handcuffed to each other.

In his argument, the trio's lead counsel N Surendran ( photo ) said there was no need for police to detain them for more than 24 hours.

He also argued that none of their actions could be seen as a violent or unconstitutional means to threaten parliamentary democracy.

"Calling for a peaceful assembly is not unconstitutional. The constitution allows for peaceful assemblies.

"Calling for Najib to step down is also not unconstitutional. Article 10 allows for freedom of expression," Surendran told the court.

A day after the trio's arrest, police detained 29 people in preemptive arrest before the #TangkapNajib rally started.

The would be rally participants were arrested under Section 124, as well as Section 143 of the Penal Code.
