After having kept a low profile from politics, former minister Zaid Ibrahim is planning to make a comeback in the parliamentary seat of Kota Baru in the next general election.

Zaid alluded to this in a blog posting today where he noted that the Kota Baru Umno division chief Muhammad Fatmi Che Salleh is the prime minister's right hand man and the newly-appointed attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali was also a former official in the division while its MP is Takiyuddin Hassan who is PAS secretary-general.

"I will work hard, I feel reasonably certain I can finish all of them off," he said.

Contacted later, Zaid confirmed his intention to contest the Kota Baru parliamentary seat in the coming national polls.

"I will definitely stand but under what banner, I have to consider," he told Malaysiakini .

Zaid was Kota Baru MP from 2004 to 2008 and was the de facto law minister under then prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's leadership.

However, he had complained that his law reform efforts were stonewalled by Umno.

Zaid said if he and the opposition emerge victorious in the next general election, he hoped to assume the same role.

"I have always felt strongly about justice and I feel with the right administration and if given the chance, I can do a lot more," he said.

However, Zaid said he first needed to gather support in Kota Baru.

In his blog posting, Zaid had outlined his "dream".

"I had a dream that I won a parliamentary seat in the general election as a candidate under the banner of Gerakan Harapan Baru, which then appointed me minister of law and attorney-general.

"I dreamt that I was able to do a complete revision of the laws of our nation and at the same time, haul up all the crooks and their accomplices to account before a court of law for the criminal acts they had committed," he said.

Zaid in the posting said he also dreamt the country's lost billions would be recovered and those who stole them would be punished while the police would be reformed.

In 2008, Zaid resigned as law minister in protest over the arrest of several individuals under the Internal Security Act (ISA).

He subsequently joined PKR but had a falling out with the party's leadership before forming his own party which faltered.
