The 16th International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC) would not have been hosted in Putrajaya if Malaysia was not committed in combating corruption, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Abdul Wahid Omar.

Abdul Wahid, who was delivering the closing keynote address at the IACC, said the Malaysian cabinet approved the conference to be held in the country without any qualms when it was first proposed.

"Speaking of this particular conference, many months ago, I remembered (Minister in Prime Minister’s Department) Paul (Low) presenting a paper to the cabinet seeking approval to host this international conference.

"In general, if the government was not committed to combating corruption, i don't think it (IACC) would have gotten an all-round approval to host this conference right smack in Putrajaya," he said.

The three-day conference beginning Wednesday was held amid the backdrop of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak having to deal with the scandal of RM2.6 billion in deposits in his personal bank accounts.

Abdul Wahid stressed that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) does indeed probe without fear or favour.

Using himself as example, Abdul Wahid said he was on Wednesday called up by the MACC to give his statement in facilitating investigation in an old case when he was in the private sector.

"The MACC has no qualms calling anybody, including cabinet ministers.

"That to me is an agency that does its job without fear or favour," he said.
