MCA wants the Sept 16 anti-Bersih 'red shirts' rally to be held in a stadium away from capital's central business areas such as Bukit Bintang or Petaling Street.
In a statement today, its Political Development Committee said they strongly object the gathering saying it was 'dangerous' for a Malay rally to be held in those areas.
"Petaling Street and Bukit Bintang are renowned tourist destinations nicknamed ‘Chinatowns’.
“The intention and purpose of the organisers in choosing to hold a Malay gathering at such areas is dangerous. The MCA president had on Sept 2 expressed the party’s stance in opposing such a gathering to the prime minister and his deputy.
"The only possibility of MCA agreeing to such a gathering is if its organisers drop their racial provocative stance and agree to hold it elsewhere such as in a stadium, away from bustling commercial areas," said the statement.
The rally, reportedly planned to be held at the Bukit Bintang and Petaling Street areas, is purportedly meant to counter the Bersih 4 rally held on Aug 29 and 30.
Certain quarters have said the Bersih 4 rally, which among others called for the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, was a Chinese-dominated rally and an insult to the Malay community.
Avoid racial tension
MCA noted the proposed gathering, if held, would further dampen the already problematic economic climate in the country as it will cause unease scared the foreign business fraternity.
"MCA is not against any legal gathering to voice out the rakyat's views. However, this gathering, which is biased and full of racial overtones, must be stopped and condemned.
"This impending gathering has sent fear across these two business areas with many planning to take the day off to escape possible racial incidents," the statement added.
As such, the party said it wants everyone to avoid racial tension and support living in moderation and harmony as was always practiced by the BN component parties.
"We urge all in the Chinese community to support MCA’s commitment to defend moderation and harmony and to fully support us in stopping and condemning the confrontation and stand-off initiated by these racist groups," it said.
