Political interference should not get into the way of jailed de facto PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim receiving proper healthcare, his family insisted today.

Anwar's family, including his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, daughters Nurul Izzah and Nurul Nuha and his lawyers N Surendran and Latheefa Koya came to the Health Ministry in Putrajaya this morning to meet the director-general, Noor Hisham Abdullah.

"We came here because there is a huge gap between what was promised to him for his injury and what was actually implemented.

"And this is wrong, because you should not let politics get into the way of proper healthcare," Nurul Izzah, who is also a PKR vice-president, told reporters after the meeting.

Pointing out that Anwar was suffering from a shoulder injury, Nurul Izzah urged the health authority to hospitalise her father immediately.

"The most crucial thing is, even the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan that they have done was given to us after a great delay," the MP for Lembah Pantai added.

Due to the injury, Anwar, 68, was unable to even read, Wan Azizah lamented.

The family submitted their written reports during the meeting with Noor Hisham.

Surendran also stressed that Anwar, despite being imprisoned, deserves the same right to proper healthcare as the ordinary citizens outside.

"I want to emphasise that the person who has been sent to prison has the exact same right to access proper healthcare, like any person who is outside.

"What they are doing to him is not reasonable and not acceptable," Surendran said.

Anwar is serving a five-year prison term after he was found guilty of sodomy in February, which his family and supporters claim to be a "political plot".

His health has been deteriorating since his imprisonment. Anwar has lost weight drastically, and has also been suffering from irregular blood pressure since his incarceration, his lawyers said.
