Following the increase in toll rates for 18 highways, Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) has urged the government to dig into its RM2.6 billion 'political donation' to ease the people's burden.

Amanah Youth deputy chief Muhammad Faiz Fadzil said motorists who use these highways to travel to work on a daily basis will have to suffer.

"The RM2.6 billion can be used to pay toll.

"If the government needs to pay RM510 million for today's increment, the RM2.6 billion is enough to pay for these highway concessionaires," he said.

He was referring to the sum which was deposited into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's personal bank accounts ahead of the last general election.

The prime minister and his supporters have denied any wrongdoing and described the RM2.6 billion as political donation from a Middle Eastern source, but critics such as former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad reject this claim.

Muhammad Faiz was speaking to reporters after submitting a memorandum to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to form a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) for 1MDB.

According to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Abdul Wahid Omar, the government had to pay RM510 million in compensation between January and October this year following the decision to postpone toll increase which should have been implemented in January.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Faiz urged the government to review the concessionaire contracts for the people's benefit.

"I think the toll rates are very high, there is no need to increase although there is a contract between government and concessionaires," he said.
