Constitutional law expert Abdul Aziz Bari and four others were today appointed onto the Selangor DAP committee.

This includes two other Malay members - Edry Faizal Eddy Yusof and Young Syefura Othman .

Edry Faizal garnered 272 votes to finish at 22nd place. Only the top 15 are elected onto the committee.

Edry was part of the previous Selangor committee, while Young Syefura joined DAP in 2014. Abdul Aziz joined in July.

Neither Young Syefura nor Abdul Aziz contested in the election.

The two other appointees are Bukit Gasing assemblyperson R Rajiv and Damansara Utama assemblyperson Yeo Bee Yin, who placed 16th in the election.

Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua continues to lead Selangor DAP, after garnering 495 votes to place eighth.

Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo topped the list with 736 votes, followed by Kampung Tunku assemblyperson Lau Weng San (695 votes) and Ean Yong Hian Wah (668 votes).

Even though DAP membership is open to all, an overwhelming majority are ethnic Chinese.

The party has tried to show a more multicultural front, by pushing forward its Malay recruits including Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, who contested in the Teluk Intan by-election.

Despite the multicultural drive, no Malay candidates were elected onto the Selangor committee, which remained status quo compared to 2013.

Pua: Delegates did not recognise new faces

Asked on this, Pua said the members were just less popular with the delegates.

“I think perhaps [...] the reason is that many Malay members are still new, many members in the state do not know them well enough.

"The issue is not about race, but based on who they (delegates) know.

"We have to make an effort to make the members recognise them over the next period.

“There is no magic potion to ensure that the next day (we will) become a party (which has more) Malay (leadership),” he told press conference after the state election concluded.
