Anwar cross-examination postponed as Shafee is ill

The High Court in Kuala Lumpur today postponed the scheduled cross-examination of PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim as senior lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah is ill.

Shafee is representing Malaysian Union Indian Party president S Nallakaruppan in Anwar's defamation suit following Nallakarupan 's allegation that the PKR leader took money from Magnum Bhd.

Shafee's co-counsel Sarah Abishegam informed Judicial Commissioner Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab in chambers that he is unwell.

However, Zaki asked that a medical chit be produced.

After a short break and the MC was produced, Sarah noted that the certificate is until tomorrow.

Despite this, Zaki asked that parties be present tomorrow as the case is an old matter that needs to be disposed.

"We come tomorrow morning at 10.30am to see how," said the judge.

The trial was initially fixed for three days until Friday for cross-examination of Anwar.

It was reported that Anwar had filed a RM100 million suit against Nallakaruppan who was formerly a PKR supreme party member over the remarks he allegedly made regarding Magnum giving money to the PKR leader.

Anwar claimed the libellous words which were published on the front page of Utusan Malaysia paper were false and baseless and published with malicious intent.

He said the allegations were deliberately created to discredit him and tarnish his reputation as the opposition leader and as a politician then

Anwar claimed that he had sent a letter of demand through his lawyers to all the defendants to withdraw the libellous words but they had failed to do so.

He is claiming RM100 million in general damages, as well as aggravated damages, exemplary damages, costs and other relief deemed fit by the court.
