Umno smartphones a hit, nearly 800 sold in three days
The Umno branded smartphones unveiled at the sidelines of the Umno annual general assembly has proven to be a hit with nearly 800 units sold in three days.
Chili Mobile (M) Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Abdul Rahim Mohammad, whose company is behind the smartphone, said he had further orders pending.
"I got an order of 1,500 units because Umno branches ordered in the hundreds for their members," he told Malaysiakini yesterday.
The Umno-branded smartphones unveiled at the sidelines of the Umno annual general assembly has proven to be a hit with nearly 800 units sold in three days.
The company specialises in customisable smartphones, which allow organisations to use their own brand in the devices and in this case, Umno.
The phone displays the Umno logo upon startup and also has an Umno wallpaper.
Abdul Rahim said this was the first time he was promoting the customisable smartphone at the Umno general annual assembly.
He added that the Android phone has an octa-core processor with 2GB RAM.
"If this is Samsung, the price would be around RM2,200, RM2,300, but mine, as there is no middleman, the price is RM888.
"If they buy 100 units, I give RM788 each, and if they buy 1,000 units, I will give them RM688 each," he said.
Abdul Rahim said he had also started exporting the customisable smartphones overseas, with 1,000 units going to Tunisia and another 1,000 units going to Saudi Arabia.
"I don't do retail; I concentrate on niche market," he said.
Abdul Rahim said his customisable smartphone project was backed by a grant of RM6 million from the Science, Technology, and Innovation Ministry.
