Farmers lament padi harvest down by 30pct due to rain

The earnings of some 400 farmers in Parit Buntar and Bagan Tiang took a 30 percent dip this season following the recent heavy rainfall.

Bagan Tiang and Parit Buntar Area Farmers Organisation (PPK) chairman Abdullah Saleh said the rain affected the drainage system making it difficult for harvesting machines to enter the fields.

“As a result, the farmers could not harvest their crop,” he told Bernama in Parit Buntar yesterday.

As such, Abdullah urged the government to build a proper drainage system to allow fast drainage of excess water.

Meanwhile, Parit Buntar Agriculture Development Council chairperson Abu Bakar Mat Ali hoped the relevant parties such as the Integrated Agriculture Development Area (IADA), the Irrigation and Drainage Department and PPK could sit together and negotiate to resolve the issue.

“One of the things they can do is to coordinate a new irrigation schedule,” he said.
