The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) panel is scheduled to meet attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali on Thursday afternoon.

One of the panel members confirmed this to Malaysiakini .

Although speculation is rife that the meeting is to persuade Apandi to change his Jan 26 position in clearing Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak of any wrongdoing, the panel member who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it remains uncertain whether the AG wants to discuss anything concerning the PM.

Another source within the MACC also confirmed with Malaysiakini that the meeting will be held at the Attorney-General's Chambers at 3pm on Thursday.

The second source said this was just a courtesy visit on the AG which had been planned earlier.

Malaysiakini has contacted Apandi on the matter.

It was previously reported that the MACC's operations review panel and special panel wants the body to engage with Apandi to help explain why he is not pressing charges against Najib.

The MACC panels had recommended a review of the AG's decision.

On Jan 26, Apandi cleared Najib of any wrongdoing and claimed that the balance of the RM2.6 billion donation had been returned to the donor in Saudi Arabia.

Apandi also ordered the MACC to close their investigations and abandon overseas probes under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty.

Apandi reached the decision to clear Najib despite a report that quoted sources within MACC as saying the body had preferred charges against the prime minister under Section 403 of the Penal Code for alleged dishonest misappropriation of property.

Hostile witnesses

Najib had so far denied any wrongdoing with regards to the allegations that he is facing.

Despite the AG's clearance, there are ongoing probes on 1MDB by the authorities of Switzerland, Singapore, Hong Kong, the US and UK.

Former Anti-Corruption Agency director Mohamad Ramli Manan said the graft- fighting commission could have been forced to downgrade the alleged charges against Najib because of of hostile witnesses during a trial, interference in the investigations and the likelihood that the PM would know the case against him before his statement was recorded.

Ramli also suggested that Apandi be investigated for harbouring an alleged offender following his actions.
