PKR lawmaker G Manivannan brought bottles of liquor into the Dewan Rakyat in an attempt to force the authorities to curb the easy availability of cheap hard liquor in the country.

Showing six sealed bottles, he said he was forced to act following the inaction of seven ministries on this social problem.

"For the record, I don't drink and smoke. But I bring these samples to show how easy it is to buy these things," he said when debating the royal address in the House.

He then flashed the bottles one by one, saying," (they come in) many colour and brands - cap Tiga Kucing, cap Kapak."

The move caused deputy speaker Ronald Kiandee to raise his eyebrows and quip "lots of bottles, don't open."

"I bring these samples to surrender to the Health Ministry for inspection and analysis," said the PKR Kapar lawmaker.

"I want a report to show how dangerous these liquors are to be tabled in the House before the next session commences.

"I first raised this issue on Nov 26 last year. I said liquor selling was rampant and voiced my concern that the students were also involved," he said earlier in the debate.

“Things have gotten worse when youths drink openly at housing areas and parks,” he added.

He said he urged seven ministries including Health, Education, Youth and Sport, Home, Women, Family and Community Development, as well as Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government, to act.

"But I have not seen any initiatives from the government," he slammed.
