Participants of the Red2Green walk from Kuantan to Parliament, walked 10 hours today to reach the third checkpoint, Sri Jaya to complete day three of their 17 day protest walk against bauxite mining activities.

Along the 28km journey, they received warm encouragement from supporters who horned and shouted when they passed by. A woman even bought them some 'Ais Kacang', to help them cool down from the scorching heat.

PKR Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh wrote in her Facebook page:"I am very touched! She (the woman) said she knows why they are doing this, it is to raise awareness among the people of the threat to health and the environment. She knows that the fight is also for her children."

Himpunan Hijau chief, Wong Tack, who three years ago embarked on the same 260km journey from Kuantan to Parliament to against Lynas, joined in today's walk.

He told Malaysiakini he came to support the anti-bauxite residents as he knew today's part of the journey was the most arduous.

"Three years ago, it was at this point that we felt like giving up...and today, it seemed more difficult.

"After today, people can't count on their physical strength to continue the journey but they must rely on spiritual power gathered from the people."

He saw his participation today as important to give support and encouragement, despite that only 16 participants completed the walk today at Sri Jaya.

"I feel frustrated. Why hasn't the government changed a bit after three years? Why is it forcing people to embark on this journey again?"

The team will camp near Surau Sri Jaya tonight before continuing their journey on foot to Maran tomorrow.

The walk will end at the Parliament building on March 28, when the participants will hand over their memorandum to the MPs.

Severe pollution in the Kuantan area prompted a three month moratorium on bauxite mining from January 15.

Seeing the moratorium is about to end in one month's time, the residents are dissatisfied with many unresolved problems in illegal mining, fearing that things will be the same after the moratorium.
