A gas explosion at a restaurant in Mid Valley Megamall this morning has left eight injured, according to the Fire and Rescue Department.

A spokesperson for the Pantai Fire and Rescue Department said the incident happened at about 9.45am.

"We received a call and a fire engine with 10 firefighters were deployed to the scene.

“Part of the roof outside the restaurant was damaged. It is understood there was a check for the gas supply yesterday and further checks are taking place today," he added.

The spokesperson said initial findings pointed to a possible gas leak.

The department’s Twitter said two have burn injuries while the rest have light injuries and were being treated in hospital.

The mall in a statement confirmed the incident this morning where it stated that it is due to re-instatement work to its liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) system after maintenance works.

“We had minor explosions at two food and beverage outlets. There were minor injuries to our maintenance staff, LPG contractor and tenant staff. Medical treatment is already being given. There were no fatalities, neither were there any injuries to the public,” it said, adding that they are working with the relevant authorities and have shut all the gas systems in Mid Valley Megamall until further notice.

The mall, however, will remain open to visitors and promised to keep its patrons updated.
