PARLIAMENT The government has ramped up online efforts to counter dissemination of propaganda by militant groups.

"Among initiatives by the government include concerted and fact-based 'counter-messaging' and 'counter-narrative', to address target group," Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak said.

"The public is advised to be aware of those spreading terrorism propaganda and not be easily influenced by those who can undermine national security, stability and harmony," he said.

He was said this in a parliamentary written reply to Abdul Manan Ismail (BN-Paya Besar).

Abdul Manan asked the minister if Malaysia is cooperating with Google, Twitter and Facebook to deal with terrorism, including extremist groups, and those spreading "slander and lies".

To this, Salleh said the government is working with international platform providers like Facebook and Google in ongoing investigations.

However, there are constraints over different interpretations of the law, he said.

This is especially because the platform providers operate outside of Malaysia, the minister said.
