The Penang DAP government was today urged to review the conditions and standard of road construction in the state as most of the road surfaces are rough and bumpy.

The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) said the contractors involved in the construction of the roads needed to be held responsible for any shoddy work resulting in uneven road surfaces and potholes which could endanger motorists.

CAP president SM Mohamed Idris said a recent CAP survey found that among the main roads which are damaged were those along Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, Jalan Thean Teik, Jalan Paya Terubong, Jalan Jelutong, Jalan Perak and Jalan Hutton.

"These damaged roads will endanger road users, especially when Penang is expecting more tourists during the school holidays and festivals.

"Speedy restoration measures need to be taken to ensure that our roads do not expose road users to any danger," he said in a statement in George Town today.

He said with a 120 percent increase in motor vehicles, especially private cars on the roads in Penang in the last 10 years (2002 to 2012), it was important the roads were well maintained.

Mohamed Idris said the contractors responsible must comply with standard operating procedures to carry out weekly checks on all roads they built and which were under their management.
