IPIC says Aabar BVI not theirs, 1MDB surprised

Abu Dhabi’s International Petroleum Investment Corporation (IPIC) tells the London Stock Exchange it does not own British Virgin Island-registered Aabar PJS Limited, to whom 1MDB had paid RM4.24 billion (about US$1.367 billion).

1MDB said it is surprised by this because then IPIC managing director Khadem al Qubaisi had shown documents proving the BVI firm is owned by Aabar, which is in turn owned by IPIC.

The payments were for security deposit for bonds and upon cancellation of options given to IPIC for stakes in a power plant, it was earlier reported, according to Public Accounts Committee report.

The PAC Hansard also reveals 1MDB had rushed its first deal – a US$2.5 billion joint venture with PetroSaudi – and neglected due diligence demanded by the 1MDB board so a Saudi royal who had planned a Kuala Lumpur trip could witness the signing.

The Hansard also reveals 1MDB could only show documentary evidence that Good Star Ltd is a subsidiary of PetroSaudi six years after it transferred US$700 million to the firm.
