No police action for use of poppy seeds in cooking
You can continue to use poppy seeds as a spice in cooking. The police will not arrest you.
This assurance comes from inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar himself.
"Poppy seeds are a spice long used in our cooking. It is taken only in small quantities and does not show up positive in urine," Khalid told a press conference at the Police Training Centre in Kuala Lumpur today.
He said he agreed with Health Minister Dr S Subramaniam that using poppy seeds in small quantities did not impair health.
These seeds are widely used in cooking in India and several countries in the Middle East and Europe.
The issue of poppy seeds came up after it was found that cakes containing poppy seeds were being sold in Kuala Lumpur.
