Citing the spirit of democracy, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali said today the formation of new political parties must be celebrated.

The Selangor menteri besar said this in response to the soon-to-be-formed political party that was announced by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad last week.

However, when asked if PKR would cooperate with the new party, Azmin said it all depended on the new party’s agenda and ideologies.

“If the party agrees to be together in the reform agenda, certainly we will work together with any political party and individual that support the reform agenda."

Azmin told reporters this after the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Selangorku housing development in Puchong.

Mahathir last week had also announced that a new group or coalition would be formed to further the Save Malaysia movement's objectives.

Asked whether PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man’s call for a ceasefire has failed or otherwise, Azmin reiterated his stance that all political parties should return to the negotiating table.

“I have issued a statement, I stick to my statement. We support the idea and we should encourage all the political parties to come back to the drawing board and discuss.

“We must have the humility to talk and continue the discussion,” he said.

Tuan Ibrahim last week called for a ceasefire among opposition parties, stressing that they should train their guns on the main enemy – Umno/Barisan Nasional.

Although many opposition leaders welcomed his call, many PAS leaders said that this was just Tuan Ibrahim’s personal stand and the PAS leader himself yesterday said the call was merely his personal view.
