The Selangor government and opposition party Bersatu are nearing a broad-based agreement that could give the latter a greater role in state affairs, according to Bersatu supreme council member Dr Afif Bahardin.
A proposed confidence and supply agreement, if finalised, would give Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari (below), who is from PKR, the backing of more than a two-thirds majority in the 56-member state assembly.
Afif said negotiations between the two sides had made positive progress, with an announcement expected “soon”.
"There will be an announcement. What is important now is that the outcome will benefit all Selangor residents, including those in state constituencies held by Bersatu,” the Taman Medan assemblyperson told Malaysiakini.

Asked whether the deal would include constituency allocations for Bersatu assemblypersons, Afif said the discussions went “beyond allocations”.
He said Bersatu wanted its assemblypersons to participate in the state administration’s decision-making, including through access to government meetings.
“Previously, as opposition assemblypersons, we were not allowed to participate in meetings at the state and PBT (local authority) levels,” he said.
However, Afif denied that Bersatu was seeking positions in the state exco or as local councillors.
Malaysiakini has contacted Amirudin for comment.
Shifting ties
Last week, Amirudin reportedly said Bersatu assemblypersons would sign an agreement with the state government before the state budget is tabled.
The proposed pact comes amid strained ties between Pakatan Harapan and BN, which are partners in the federal and Selangor governments. Bersatu has also fallen out with PAS, its fellow Perikatan Nasional component.
Amirudin’s administration has the support of 35 assemblypersons: 32 from Harapan, two from BN, and one independent.
Bersatu holds 11 opposition seats, while PAS has 10.

OK Bagus. PH/PKR Prepare to Loose Selangor !!!!
Selangor MB Amirudin has a chance to deliver some key electoral reforms with this 2/3 majority in the state assembly. Not too long ago, Sunway University political scientist Wong Chin Huat has penned an open letter urging Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari to implement electoral reforms at the state level, a day after making a similar appeal to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. In his letter, Wong argued that the winner-takes-all nature of Malaysia’s first-past-the-post (FPTP) electoral system has put the country’s Malay electorate in a bind. Sunway University political scientist Wong Chin Huat Coining the term “Malay Dilemma 2.0”, Wong said Malay voters face a choice between one-party rule, which can enable abuses of power that harm the Malay interests it is supposed to protect, and multi-party competition, which carries the risk of the system being captured by opponents of Malay dominance. To address this, he proposed creating nine appointed assembly seats. Unlike in some states, where such appointments are at the discretion of the chief minister or menteri besar, Wong’s proposed system would allocate the seats according to each party or coalition’s statewide popular vote, as long as they meet a certain vote share threshold, 5%, etc. This would ensure FPTP and compromising electoral pacts like BN-PN or PH-Bersatu null and void, as each party now just needs to get more % of votes to get more % of seats, not just 1 more than the other to win one seat. Furthermore, everyone is heard at the ballot box then, especially minority voices & every segment of the majority would not be split and would not be forced to consolidate their votes. We would now be able to vote with our conscience & not worry about our favoured party. This will change the political arena in Selangor and encourage other states to follow in example. I highly 110% urge Selangor MB Amirudin to consider this electoral reform.
