Cops record Khairul's statement over 'plot against PM'
Police have recorded a statement from Umno Youth vice-chief Khairul Azwan Harun regarding his allegation of a high-level conspiracy against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Police have recorded a statement from Umno Youth vice-chief Khairul Azwan Harun regarding his allegation of a high-level conspiracy against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Confirming this, inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said he was quizzed at the Bukit Aman federal police headquarters this afternoon.
"Yes. We have recorded his statement. But I cannot reveal more details for now," he told Malaysiakini.
Asked if Khairul submitted any evidence to back his allegation, Khalid replied: "I will reveal more during my next press conference."
"As I said before, this is a serious allegation which involves prominent individuals and former high-ranking government officials.
"We will study the matter first, before making any comments or decisions regarding this investigation," he said.
In his police report filed on Tuesday, Khairul named recently retired Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz, outgoing Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Abu Kassim Mohamed and ex-attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail.
He said the three were suspected of providing confidential information to foreign agencies, including the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), without authorisation.
Khairul also alleged that some of the documents submitted were falsified and the information twisted to achieve their agenda.
The report came in the wake of the United States Department of Justice filing civil suits related to the alleged abuse of 1MDB funds, which contained a slew of damning claims.
Gani had since described the allegation as a “publicity stunt” and engaged former Malaysian Bar president Ragunath Kesavan as his lawyer regarding this matter.
Zeti said she would seek legal counsel while Abu Kassim promised to respond to the matter soon.
