PAS Ulama information chief Khairuddin Aman Razali indicated that cheaper cars may be part of the 14th general election manifesto of the Islamic party.

Doing away with the excise duty on vehicles, Khairuddin said, would be a solution to bankruptcy issues.

"The leading cause of bankruptcy is due to people being unable to pay for their car because the vehicles are expensive.

"Why are cars expensive? Because of government tax. If the government doesn't impose tax on vehicles, then they would be cheap," he said in a ceramah video uploaded on his official Facebook page yesterday.

Khairuddin said the loss of government revenue from the abolition of the car excise duty can be offset by the goods and services tax (GST).

"Car tax isn't all that much. From my reading, it isn't even RM10 billion a year," the Kuala Nerus MP added.

The government expects to collect RM42 billion in GST for this year.

Khairuddin pointed out that BN, in its manifesto in the last general election, had promised to reduce car prices, but this was not fulfilled.

"The outcome is that common people have to buy cars at high prices (with loans) from banks and the banks are the ones that profit," he said.

As such, Khairuddin said, he hoped to see cheap cars being part of the PAS election manifesto.

"God-willing. I say 'God-willing' because it has yet to be finalised. But among the items in the manifesto will be on cheap cars," he said.
