Pakatan Harapan's position on local government elections has yet to be decided, said key leaders from Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) and DAP.

Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said that objections to the elections by Parti Pribumi Bersatu (Bersatu) president Dr Mahathir Mohamad might be raised when coalition leaders meet in the future.

Similarly, DAP strategist Liew Chin Tong said the coalition would discuss the issue "when the time comes".

The two leaders spoke to reporters separately following a forum in Kuala Lumpur today on the thoughts of former PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

Mohamad declined to state his party's stance on the topic, except to stress that the party's position would be similar to Harapan.

On Mahathir's objections, Liew said that the former premier appear to have an outdated view on the ethnic makeup of urban areas, leading to fears that local elections would result in ethnic divisions between urban and rural areas.

"This is an 'old idea'... which we need to discuss in time. The old idea is that cities are dominated by non-Malays when in fact Malays make up the majority in all cities throughout Malaysia, including Kuala Lumpur.

"So I think there is room for discussion," said Liew.

He added Mahathir had stated his objection during a public forum because he was specifically asked on this.

Liew said that eventually, Mahathir would be asked to consider the facts when Harapan eventually discuss it.

On Mahathir's hope that he would be given an advisory position should Harapan take over Putrajaya, both Mohamad and Liew said that the coalition leaders would have to meet on this.

"We have to discuss this. It was not discussed (in our meetings)," said Mohamad.

Both Mohamad and Liew opined that the focus now for Harapan is winning the upcoming elections and positions were a secondary matter.

On the likelihood of Mahathir squabbling with Harapan leaders, just like how he attacked his successor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Mohamad said this was not an issue for now.

"I have no doubts. We don't know the future. But for now, he is really serious in dethroning BN with us.

"Today, his character is this. What will happen tomorrow?" said Mohamad, who was once a fierce critic of Mahathir.
