Muhyiddin wants safeguards in Hadi's bill, worries about zealotry

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president Muhyiddin Yassin has urged PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, or Act 355, to include safeguards.

He raised caution over the proposed amendments, which will increase the maximum punishment in the Syariah Courts from three years' imprisonment, RM5,000 fine and six lashes to 30 years' imprisonment, RM100,000 fine and 100 lashes, could lead to overzealousness.

"I raise this because I am worried that if we are not careful in this, there would be those who are ideologically and religiously overzealous, leading to a tendency to recklessly punish syariah offenders without considering the aspect of justice in Islam," he said.
