An Umno Youth member today lodged a police report over a fake letter bearing the purported signature of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak seeking support from a corporate company.

According to Nazir Hussin Akhtar Hussin, the letter, dated April 6, also bore the purported letterhead of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and Najib's forged signature. It was sent to a high ranking official of an automotive and construction company, Nazir added.

"With the general election coming up soon, I will like to use this medium to reach out to your humble self and solicit for your support and loyalty. With an amiable personality, such as yourself behind me, I am confident that we will achieve great things working together," the letter states.

Speaking to reporters after lodging the report at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters this morning, Nazir said he had received a copy of the letter last Friday and he had personally sought clarification from the PMO. 

He said the fake letter, a copy of which he also showed to the reporters present, was meant to tarnish the integrity of the prime minister and the PMO. 

Nazir added that he believes similar letters were sent out to other corporate bodies and individuals. 

Likely a scam

The purported letter, addressed Weststar Group managing director Syed Azman Ibrahim, also stated how his contributions were noticed by Najib.

"Your leadership in your sector has not gone unnoticed, hence you are receiving this letter from me," reads the letter.

The recipient of the letter was asked to reply to an email, purportedly belonging to Najib.

Nazir expected the sender may ask the recipient for funds in the following correspondences.

"This is one of the attacks brought against the prime minister as the election (looms). This is something (carefully) planned, cannot be done easily," said Nazir.

He called upon those who received similar letters to verify with PMO or lodge a police report.

"I urge the police to probe into the case," he said.

However, Nazir added, he could not tell who was behind this.

When contacted, Dang Wangi OCPD Mohd Sukri Kaman said the police would record Nazir's statements before deciding which law was to be applied.
