Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali has accused Umno of attempting to hijack the launching of the Sungai Buloh-Kajang Mass Rapid Transit (SBK MRT) line for its own political purposes.

"We have been informed that Umno attempted to hijack the MRT programme as its own programme," he told the media in Kajang today.

"We do not allow government programmes and projects to be turned into political programmes," he added.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his cabinet members attended the grand opening of Phase Two of the SBK MRT line yesterday, which is offering half-price fares to passengers until August 31.

The 50 percent discount in conjunction with Merdeka celebrations applies to all MRT, LRT, and Monorail lines.

More than 20,000 people reportedly attended the grand opening of the SBK MRT Line yesterday. The project, costing RM21 billion, will change the way some 1.2 million people living around its 51km route, travel. 

Azmin, who is also PKR deputy president, also denied an allegation made yesterday by Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Noh Omar that the state government had prohibited its civil servants from attending the event.

"It is not true," he answered.

In his earlier speech when launching a new community hall in Saujana Impian, Kajang, Azmin assured the public that the state government would not allow corruption and abuse of power in its projects as that would impact the people.

"Only development projects with quality and are beneficial to the rakyat, will be allowed in the state," he said. 

"We do not allow development that will destroy the environment and that would impact the people with debts, corruption and abuse of power," he added. 

"This will not happen in Selangor," Azmin pledged.
