Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has appointed preacher Wan Ji Wan Hussin as his information officer tasked with explaining the state’s Islamic policies.

In particular, Wan Ji will help counter false information about the state government on matters concerning Islam, Free Malaysia Today (FMT) reported today.

Wan Ji, a Kelantan PKR Youth leader, was sworn in before the chief minister at Komtar today.

“We are elated to have Wan Ji in our midst to help in perfecting the state’s policies,” Lim was reported as saying at a press conference.

The young preacher will work alongside Lim’s strategic adviser and PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

Wan Ji was reported as saying in his speech during the swearing-in ceremony that the Penang government “has done a lot of good for its Muslim population, and Malays in general.

“So, I will counter propaganda from our political rivals who have said otherwise,” FMT reported him as saying.

Saifuddin said Wan Ji, who is known for being vocal on various issues, was well fitted for the job.

“Through his good oratory and writing skills, he will counter false narratives from the other side.

“He will also play an important role in informing Muslims that the Penang government has done a lot for Islamic development in the state,” Saifuddin said.

Wan Ji has been in the spotlight in the past for speaking up on various controversies.

Last June, he lodged a police report against Pahang mufti Abdul Rahman Osman over the latter's proclamation of DAP as 'kafir harbi'.

A month before that, he also criticised Kelantan’s hudud enactment as being PAS’ own laws “and not syariah”.
