PAS central committee member Muhtar Suhaili has urged authorities to arrest Dr Mahathir Mohamad under the Sedition Act 1948 over his speech during the "Anti-kleptocracy rally" on Saturday.

In a statement today, Muhtar said Mahathir had went overboard by making remarks on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's "ancestry."

"I urge the authorities to arrest Mahathir...This was made worse by rally-goers who cheered him on, as though they agreed with Mahathir's racism," said Muhtar.

During the rally, Mahathir said: "Maybe he can trace his ancestry to Bugis pirates. Somehow, he lost his way and came to Malaysia. Go home to Bugis (Sulawesi)!"

Muhtar, who is also the PAS Youth treasurer, said Mahathir's remark showed that he was not a statesman, nor does it reflect Islamic teachings.

"Malay, Chinese, Indians, mamak, Bugis, Jawa, Banjar, Iban, Kadazan and all other races are the same in the eyes of God.

"The speech does not sound like one from a statesman who wants peace and harmony in the country. Moreover, some sultans in Malaysia have Bugis heritage," he said.

Mahathir was the final speaker at the "Anti-kleptocracy rally," which was organised by Pakatan Harapan in protest against the lack of action domestically against the 1MDB saga.
