Najib presents the 'biggest ever' budget

The RM280.25 billion "mother of all budgets" is the biggest ever in the country’s history.

The government abolished four tolls in Selangor, Kedah and Johor, including the Batu Tiga and Sg Rasau tolls.

However, second Finance Minister Johari Abdul Ghani said the government may extend the concession of other tolls run by Plus to compensate for the abolishing of four tolls.

The Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) programme will be maintained at RM1,200.

Malaysians with annual household incomes of between RM20,000 and RM70,000 will enjoy a cut in income tax.

The government allocated more than RM3.5 billion for the Bumiputera Wellbeing Transformation under Budget 2018.

Civil servants will also receive a special payment of RM1,500 each, to be paid out next January and before Hari Raya.

Earlier, in his opening speech, Najib slammed the "man" who cast aspersions on his Bugis ancestry.

He also ruffled the opposition's feathers by referring to a "chicken entrepreneur” called Kak Wan.

When closing his speech, Najib heaped praises on his deputy and "friend" Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The premier also slammed the opposition coalition, dismissing it as "consistently inconsistent."

In return, opposition lawmakers let out shouts of “kleptocracy” and held up placards against the GST, and on Pakatan Harapan's RM1,500 minimum salary, as Najib ended his speech.

Later, the budget received both bouquets and brickbats from BN lawmakers and their opposition counterparts, respectively.

Lawmakers and activists rue Ops Lalang

Former Ops Lalang detainees Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng rued the crackdown 30 years ago, but did not mention their now ally Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who allegedly masterminded it.

Opposition MP Kasthuri Patto placed the blame on Najib for continuing to enforce preventive detention laws.

KiniTV highlighted a 30-minute documentary on Ops Lalang, shot by Dave Anthony, whose wife was detained in the dragnet.

Parti Warisan Sabah president Mohd Shafie Apdal was released from MACC custody after he posted bail of RM100,000.

At the same time, Batu MP Tian Chua was released from Kajang prison after serving a one-month sentence.

Former car repossessor Koong Swee Kwan was convicted for the murder of banker Hussain Ahmad Najadi.
