Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has denied interfering with Pakatan Harapan's application to register as a coalition.

Zahid, who is also the home minister, said the decision lies solely with the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

"Even though ROS is under the Home Ministry, I don't stick my hand in their affairs on whether to accept or reject Harapan's application," he said at a press conference in Parliament today.

He was commenting on the meeting between Harapan and Home Ministry secretary-general Alwi Ibrahim earlier today.

Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad (centre in photo) said the coalition's application to register with the ROS had not yet been approved due to problems faced by his party Bersatu, and DAP. 

This is regarding Bersatu's constitution and annual general assembly, and DAP's central executive committee reelections.

Zahid insisted that any delays were a procedural matter, and not a political one, regardless of what others might say.

"It is up to them to evaluate (the situation) but I am very professional and left it all to the (Home Ministry) secretary-general (Alwi) and the ROS to decide," he said.

Alwi, who was present at the press conference, said DAP and Bersatu needed to resolve their problems before the ROS could proceed.

The DAP has already held re-elections, leaving Bersatu the remaining party to have problems with the ROS.

Meanwhile, in a written parliamentary reply to Kuala Krai MP Hatta Ramli on the delay of Harapan's registration, Zahid said the ROS does not have deadlines.

He also said that each application will also be reviewed in terms of security and public interest by the registrar.
