After recuperating for a month following surgery to remove a tumour, DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang is expected to make his return to the political scene by Jan 27.

This was confirmed by Johor DAP chairperson Liew Chin Tong when queried by Malaysiakini.

However, Liew kept mum when asked whether Kit Siang would make his return in Gelang Patah or Ayer Hitam, only revealing that Lim will “go around Johor”.

Malaysiakini understands that Kit Siang will first appear in his constituency of Gelang Patah.

His recovery comes in the midst of DAP’s siege on Ayer Hitam, a Malay-majority seat that MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong has held for three terms.

DAP is bullish on the opposition’s chances in the constituency, given that Wee’s majority has been declining in each election.

In the Harapan seat negotiations for Peninsular Malaysia, Amanah was made to surrender Ayer Hitam to DAP.

As a compromise, an Amanah candidate will be run in the constituency, but under a DAP banner.

Kit Siang was diagnosed with Stage 1 cancer last year and underwent surgery on Dec 19 to remove a tumour in his left kidney.

“The laparoscopic partial nephrectomy went well and doctors expect him to recover to his former state without any complications,” his son and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said at the time.

In his place, Kit Siang’s work in the constituency was undertaken by his special representative Ng Siam Luang and the Gelang Patah DAP office, while fieldwork was overseen by Liew.
