Earthquakes a near daily occurrence, says Indonesia's met agency

Earthquakes are something of a norm in Indonesia - almost every other day, seismic activities take place in the country which is located on the Pacific Rim.

According to the website of the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), moderate and mild earthquakes occur almost on a daily basis.

Most of the seismic activities occur underwater with the epicentres hundreds of kilometres off the coast, causing tsunami concerns.

In January 2018 alone, a total of 44 earthquakes were recorded in Indonesia.

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred in Lebak Banten on Jan 23, about 153km from Jakarta, which also “shook” the capital with a population of 10 million.

Earthquakes do not affect Malaysia much in general, but according to data from the Indonesian Tourism Ministry, more than a million Malaysians visit the country each year.
