Selangor Pakatan Harapan together, with electoral reform coalition Bersih, today submitted 200 objections from 30,000 voters against the second proposal for the Election Commission's ongoing re-delineation exercise.

Harapan president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the 30,000 signatures were collected by PKR, DAP, Amanah, Bersatu and Bersih as well, ahead of the deadline set for tomorrow.

"These objections also represent the voice of all Selangor voters who are counting on the EC to act in a more professional manner, without siding with any party, and to scrutinise these objections based on facts presented," Wan Azizah told reporters at the Selangor EC office in Shah Alam this morning.

Present with Wan Azizah, who is also PKR president, were Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu as well as DAP and PKR's Selangor leaders.

Any objection to the EC’s recommendations can be made by parties as stated in the Federal Constitution, namely, the state government, local authorities or a group of 100 people or more whose names are in the current electoral roll.

Selangor Harapan election director Dr Xavier Jeyakumar said the objections were filed to protect the rights of voters at parliamentary and state levels.

"Based on the high number of objections filed, it is clear that people in Selangor are now more aware of their democratic rights and the conduct of elections in Malaysia.

"Therefore, the EC must give priority to the involvement of the people in the re-delineation process and to ensure that all submitted objections were given an opportunity to be heard in a public inquiry," Xavier, the Sri Andalas assemblyperson who is also Selangor PKR vice-chairperson, said.

Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah (photo) questioned the EC's alleged rush to complete the redelineation exercise before the forthcoming 14th general election.

"The local inquiry process should be based on an individual's right to vote for the new government.

"There is no meaning for the EC to proceed with the inquiry if it rushes through the process without taking measures to address issues of malapportionment and gerrymandering," she stressed.

"Bersih is expecting the inquiry to start in one or two weeks’ time, after which the final report would be submitted to the prime minister and passed by Parliament," Maria added.

EC chairperson Mohd Hashim Abdullah previously said that the date for the 14th general election would not be dependent on the completion of its ongoing redelineation exercise as its duty is only to complete the report and hand it over to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

The EC has, since Jan 15, displayed its reviewed electoral boundary changes for Selangor involving five parliamentary constituencies - Tanjong Karang, Kuala Selangor, Gombak, Ampang, and Pandan - down from the 18 proposed previously.

In addition, the EC retained its proposal to rename the parliamentary constituency of Serdang to Bangi, while dropping proposals to rename four other parliamentary constituencies.

While the first proposal had proposed the renaming of six Selangor legislative assembly seats, the second proposal had suggested only four: Batu Caves (to be renamed Sungai Tua), Chempaka (Pandan Indah), Bangi (Sungai Ramal) and Teluk Datuk (Banting).
