MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong today said that his party produced Chinese New Year festive greetings every year but this was not done with the aim of winning an Oscar or Grammy.

In response to DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang's remark that DAP's Chinese New Year video was more popular this year, Wee said MCA was “not interested”.

"We are not (aiming) for the Oscars or Grammys or any other prestigious award by international bodies. We are not interested.

"As a party, whether our acting skills are good or not doesn't matter but I think the message that we want to send across is more important," he told reporters on the sidelines of MCA's Chinese New Year “open house” celebrations at the party's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

Wee cited how a certain lawmaker had asked Chinese youths not to return to their hometowns for their family reunion dinners and instead return only to vote.

Wee said this was not advisable and it was important for youths to have a proper meal with their parents and other family members.

"Because of that, MCA came out with our video which emphasises the importance of the family as a single unit and as a basic institution. It is for us to treasure for to have harmony in society, we must start from home.

"We are duty-bound to go back and meet our parents. You cannot just listen to all these new ideas to come back just for the election. I think politics is not everything in our life."

Will defend Ayer Hitam

Wee added that it was only natural for a video that was "humorous and sarcastic" to get more views.

"(But) whether you get the vote or not, I don't know. (If) that is a measurement of getting support, I wish you good luck.

"I cannot say it's wrong or right but I wish you good luck because it's Chinese New Year and I don't want to use bad words. They have their own script, we have ours too,” said Wee.

At the time of writing, DAP lawmaker Teresa Kok's latest Chinese New Year video has garnered over 86,000 views on YouTube, while MCA's video featuring its top leaders has 61,000 views on its Facebook page.

On another matter, Wee confirmed that he will be defending his Ayer Hitam parliamentary constituency Ayer Hitam at the next polls.

"I have done many things for the constituency in the past three terms. The people can judge this.

"I will face anyone (for the seat) and I hope to get a new mandate," he said.
