Police quiz family over baby's death due to suspected abuse

The police have recorded statements from several witnesses, including family members of the 46-day-old baby girl who died after she was allegedly abused by her parents in Kampung Tok Panjang, Bukit Tengah in Penang on Thursday.

Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) police chief, ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said he would also call on several individuals, including the couple’s neighbours to record their statements to facilitate investigations.

The death of Nurul Ain Umairah Muhammad Firdaus has yet to be classified.

“Further investigations are underway, including to determine the motive behind the alleged abuse of the baby until she had suffered from internal and external injuries, including brain haemorrhage.

“Thus far, we have recorded statements from several witnesses, including doctors who treated the victim as well as the one who performed the post-mortem, and the victim’s family members,” he said when contacted by Bernama in Bukit Mertajam today.

On Thursday, Nurul Ain Umairah succumbed to her injuries at 10.45am on the way to the Seberang Jaya Hospital (HSJ).

Based on the post-mortem report, Nurul Ain Umairah died of brain haemorrhage. The victim had also sustained multiple injuries.

Her parents have been remanded for seven days, beginning yesterday, to facilitate investigations under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.

Meanwhile, Nik Ros Azhan said the baby’s remains were kept at the HSJ’s forensic unit to enable dental experts to conduct tests on the victim following several bite marks on her cheeks and body.

“There is a possibility the test will be completed tomorrow as the specialist must carry out detailed examination to identify the bite marks on whether they were inflicted by the father or mother,” he said.

Meanwhile, a Bernama check at the HSJ found several family members of the victim at the forensic unit about 10am today, to claim the remains.

However, they left the vicinity after being informed they could not take the body home.
