Umno supreme council member Ahmad Shabery Cheek says people should not jump to conclusions over the arrest of an Umno leader who police say tested positive for drugs.
"I hope no quarters will be too quick to make conclusions and spread hate against any one person as it would be unfair," Shabery told journalists in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Asked if the Umno leader may have been sabotaged, he said it was a possibility as there were "anomalies” (keganjilan), but added that he did not know enough facts of the case to make a proper conclusion.
Shabery added that one individual’s issue cannot be considered to be the issue of the entire party, but nevertheless stressed that Umno leaders must be well-behaved.
"Every day, we do remind everyone of this, as it could impact the party as a whole, not only at this time (pre-election time) but at all times," said the Kemaman MP.
The Kuala Lumpur Umno leader was arrested on Monday after testing positive for methamphetamine at an unlicensed nightclub.
He was previously been touted as a potential candidate for the 14th general election, which will likely be called within weeks.
Shabery acknowledged that the opposition may use the issue as fodder, but stressed the Umno leader's fate is at the mercy of the legal system.
"It is the process that will determine whether someone is innocent or not. It must go through the existing legal process.
"We cannot pass judgment on our own," he said.
