PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang says his party does not feel cheated even though his private member's bill motion was not allowed to be debated in Parliament prior to its dissolution.

"We weren't cheated. The issue does not arise as the Dewan Rakyat agenda was already fixed. We're just waiting for time," he told a press conference in Shah Alam yesterday.

Hadi's private member's bill motion seeks to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, also known as Act 355.

The motion proposes that the maximum punishments in Act 355 be increased from three years’ imprisonment, RM5,000 fine, and six strokes of the rotan, to 10 years’ imprisonment, RM100,000 fine, and 100 strokes of the rotan.

The increased punishment will allow states to impose punishment for certain offences that are consistent with hudud.

Hadi, who is also Marang MP, said PAS had already scored an early victory by bringing up the motion.

However, he noted that for the motion to be debated, the government needs to give it priority.

"That (giving priority) is not our job. So we have already succeeded at the initial level," he said.

Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia, prior to the dissolution of the House, had refused to confirm whether Hadi's motion would be allowed to be carried forward to the 14th Parliament after the general election.

On a separate matter, Hadi said Gagasan Sejahtera, under the leadership of PAS, will contest at least 130 parliamentary seats in the 14th general election.

Parliament was dissolved yesterday, and an election must be called within 60 days.
