Teh quits DAP, to contest in Sungai Pinang

GE14 | Teh Yee Cheu has quit DAP to contest under a new political party in the Sungai Pinang state seat in the 14th general election.

Teh, who is a two-term assemblyman for the Tanjung Bungah state seat, said he quit DAP amicably.

“I have decided to contest in Sungai Pinang instead of defending my seat here so as not to be blamed for using former party resources to win the seat,” he told reporters here today.

However, Teh declined to reveal which political party he will be contesting the seat under.

He said a press conference will be held in Sungai Pinang on Monday and an announcement will be made then.

Earlier, Teh who joined DAP in 2000, submitted his official resignation letter, five membership cards and the party's flag to Sri Tanjung Bungah DAP chairperson Lim Cheng Hoe.

Teh said he had been thinking of leaving the party since 2013 because of many unresolved issues in the state.

He has been one of the most vocal critics of DAP, and has voiced concerns on various environmental issues, including the frequent flooding in the state, and the fatal Tanjung Bungah landslide last October, which claimed the lives of 11 construction workers.

He had also spearheaded an initiative to limit the tenure of the chief minister to two terms, but failed.
